IV and Injection Training Arms: A Buying Guide for Skills Labs

SIMUTEC Team

How to choose IV training arms and injection simulators: adult and paediatric arms, multi-function models, arterial puncture kits and injection-site trainers.

Multi-functional IV training arm, buttocks injection simulator and arterial arm stick kit

Short answer

Match the trainer to the skill. Use an IV training arm with a multi-vein system for cannulation and venepuncture, a multi-functional arm when you also teach deltoid injection, a paediatric arm for children's IV skills, an arterial arm kit for arterial puncture, and an injection-site simulator for intramuscular landmarks. Then plan enough units for small groups and budget for replaceable skins and veins.

Types of IV and injection trainers

• IV training arm (GD/HS1): lifelike arm with a multi-vein system for IV practice • Multi-functional IV arm (GD/HS2): IV practice plus deltoid injection • Child IV arm (GD/HS8): paediatric-sized arm with a multi-vein system • Wearable IV injection kit (GD/HS14E): five-piece wearable kit for injection practice • Arterial arm stick kit (GD/HS4E): simulated pulsation, blood return and replaceable skin • Buttocks injection simulator (GD/HS10B): transparent anatomy, landmarks and error alerts

Adult or paediatric?

Paediatric veins and landmarks differ from adult ones, so programmes that teach children's nursing benefit from a dedicated child arm. Most general nursing courses start with adult arms and add one or two paediatric arms for specialist modules.

How many trainers do you need?

A useful starting point is one arm for every three to four learners in a practical session, so each learner gets several attempts while others observe and give peer feedback. Add one spare arm so sessions continue while skins or veins are being replaced.

Plan for consumables

Repeated punctures wear skins and veins over time. Ask about replacement parts when you order, use the recommended cannula sizes, drain fluid after each session and keep a simple record of usage so you can reorder before the semester's busiest weeks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best IV arm for beginners?

A standard IV training arm with a multi-vein system, such as GD/HS1, suits most beginners because it focuses the session on core IV technique.

Can one arm teach IV and intramuscular injection?

A multi-functional arm such as GD/HS2 supports IV practice and deltoid injection. For gluteal injection landmarks, add a dedicated simulator such as GD/HS10B.

Does SIMUTEC supply replacement skins and veins?

We can coordinate consumables and replacement parts for the trainers we supply. Ask for the parts list with your quotation.
